Singh, S. P., Molina, A. and Gepts, P. 1995. Potcntial of wild coInmon bean for seed yield improvement of culdvars in the tropics. Can. J. Plant Sci. 75: 807-813. Thirty nine wild or weedy common bem (Plaseolus vulgarisL.) accessions, representing the two extremes of geographical range of distribution and domestication of cultigens in the Americas, were crossed to a highyielding, small-seeded cultivar, ICA Pijao. The resulting Fr, Fr, and F3 population bulks, along with ICA Pijao, were evaluated for seed yield, days to maturity, and lOGseed weight undei favorable growing conditions at two locations in Colombia. The F and Fu bulks were tested separately under soil-fertility and moisture stresses. Thirty random Fr-derived F, lines from the nighes? yielding population involving both Andean and Middle American wild beans, along with the parents and a control cultivar, were also evaluated for 2 yr, under favorable conditions. No F, hybrid, population bulk, or Fr-derived F line significantly outyielded ICA Pijao in any test environment. The mean yield of F, hybrids, population bulks, and Fr-derived F lines involving wild and weedy beans of Middle America was higher than that involving Andean South American wild beans. Heritability for seed yield, seed weight, and days to maturity, as well as gains from selection were comparable to those obtained in crosses among cultivars. The small seed of the progenies and the positive correlation between seed size and seed yield suggest that altemative mating schemes that increase the recovery of progenies with a cultivated phenotype should be investigated. Until this research is done, it would be premature to draw conclusions about the yield improvement potential of wild beans.

In order to determine the best developmental stage of three common bean cultivars (Talash, COS16 and Khomain) at which maximum seed quality is attained under different irrigation regimes (I1-irrigation after 60 mm, I2-irrigation after 80 mm and I3-irrigation after 100 mm evaporation from class A pan), a split plot experiment (using R.C.B. design) with 3 replications was conducte...
متن کاملAssessment of Yield Stability in Common Bean Cultivars Based on Univariate and Multivariate Methods
Stability and adaptability of ten common bean cultivars were studied in water stressed and normal conditions, three planting dates (including 5 May, 20 May and 5 June), and two years (2014 and 2016) in Shahrekord, Iran. Combined analysis of variance for yield indicated that the effect of genotype by environment interaction was significant; therefore, more accurate statistical analyses were requ...

It is believed that various types of field bean, including pinto, white and red, differ in adaptability to high temperatures and may, thus, differ in response to delay in planting. In order to evaluate this response, an experiment was conducted during 1996 at the Agricultural Research Station, Isfahan University of Technology, using a randomized complete block design with split-plot layout.
